Gas Prices Are Soaring—But Will Buying an EV Actually Save You Money?

A painful gas receipt can make an electric car look like the obvious next purchase. You watch the dollars climb at the pump and start wondering how much you could save by plugging in instead.

But there are two different questions: Will an EV cost less to drive, and will buying one actually leave you with more money? Cheap charging can deliver real savings. A costly trade-in, higher insurance bill or dependence on expensive public chargers can change the answer.

Before you trade a reliable car for relief from gas prices, here is the math that matters.

Quick answer: An EV can save you money, especially if you already need another vehicle, drive plenty of miles and have affordable charging at home or work. However, replacing a reliable paid-off car solely to avoid expensive gasoline may increase your total costs. Compare the purchase, financing, insurance, charging and expected resale costs over the same ownership period.

How Much Cheaper Is Charging an EV Than Buying Gas?

The answer depends on your vehicle's efficiency and the price you pay for energy. Comparing the cost of a full tank with a full battery is misleading because they may take you very different distances.

Compare the cost to travel 100 miles instead:

  • Gas car: 100 ÷ miles per gallon × price per gallon.
  • EV: electricity purchased per 100 miles × price per kilowatt-hour.

For an initial vehicle comparison, use the model-specific ratings on FuelEconomy.gov. For your own budget, adjust for your routes, weather and driving habits.

Example assumptions: The table below uses a gas car getting 30 mpg, a conventional hybrid getting 50 mpg and an EV requiring 30 purchased kWh per 100 miles, including charging losses. Annual driving is 12,000 miles. These are illustrative calculations, not current national averages, charging quotes or promises for a particular vehicle.

At $4 gasoline and $0.15 electricity, the example EV saves $1,060 a year in energy compared with the 30-mpg car. At $0.50 electricity, it costs $200 more a year to power than that gas car.

The vehicle has not changed. The charging price has.

Can Public Charging Erase Your EV Savings?

Yes, depending on the rate and the vehicle you are comparing. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that public charging, especially DC fast charging, generally costs more than charging at home.

Before buying, check prices at the stations you would actually use. Include applicable session fees, subscriptions, parking charges and idle fees. A cheap charger across town is not necessarily a practical everyday solution.

Most Drivers Need a Mix of Charging Prices

Suppose 80% of your purchased electricity costs $0.15 per kWh at home and 20% costs $0.50 on trips. Your blended rate is:

(0.80 × $0.15) + (0.20 × $0.50) = $0.22 per kWh.

Using the same 30-kWh example, that is $6.60 per 100 miles, or $792 for 12,000 miles. Energy savings against the $4-gasoline example become $808 a year.

Find the Charging Price Where the Advantage Disappears

With $4 gasoline, a 30-mpg car and an EV using 30 purchased kWh per 100 miles, energy costs are equal at approximately $0.44 per kWh, before separate charging fees.

Against the 50-mpg hybrid, the equivalent threshold is approximately $0.27 per kWh. An efficient hybrid gives an EV a much tougher cost target than a thirsty gas vehicle.

Use the right electricity number: At home, include the supply, delivery and other per-kWh charges that increase when you charge. Account for time-of-use rates and any added plan fees. Do not automatically assign your entire existing household service charge to the car.

This is where a lower energy bill can become an expensive buying decision.

In our example, switching from $4 gasoline to $0.15 charging saves about $88 a month in energy. That is useful, but it does not automatically justify a new monthly payment, sales tax and a different insurance premium.

A paid-off car still has maintenance, repair and depreciation costs. However, keeping it avoids the immediate expense of buying its replacement.

Make the correct comparison:

  • If you need another car anyway: Compare an EV with the gas or hybrid vehicle you would realistically purchase.
  • If your current car is reliable: Compare keeping it with the full cost of switching.
  • If your current car needs expensive repairs: Include a realistic repair estimate in the keep-it option.

The Other Costs to Check Before Buying an EV

Purchase Price, Financing and Resale Value

Get actual out-the-door prices for comparable vehicles. Compare similar sizes, equipment and condition instead of putting a compact EV against a large gas SUV.

For an ownership-cost estimate, add the purchase price, taxes, fees, financing interest and running costs, then subtract the expected resale value. If you are comparing vehicles you already own, start with their current value rather than their original purchase price.

Avoid double-counting: Do not add all loan principal payments on top of the full purchase price. Monthly payments help assess affordability; purchase cost minus resale value helps assess ownership cost.

Insurance and Registration

Request insurance quotes for the exact vehicles before signing. In a hypothetical example, an extra $50 a month in insurance would consume $600 of the $1,060 annual energy savings calculated above.

Check your state's registration charges for the vehicle too. Use the actual difference between your options instead of assuming it is zero.

Home Charging Installation

Get a written quote covering the charging equipment, installation, permits and any required electrical work. DOE advises checking installation requirements with your utility and an electrical contractor.

If you rent or park in a shared garage, confirm that you can install or use charging before buying. Count only charging access you can reasonably rely on.

Maintenance, Tires and Repair Coverage

Battery-electric vehicles generally require less routine maintenance than gas vehicles, according to DOE. They do not need engine oil changes, but tires, suspension, climate-control systems and other components still need attention.

Check the maintenance schedule and tire prices for the exact model. For a used EV, review battery condition, remaining warranty coverage and any inspection findings rather than assuming either a battery failure or a trouble-free ownership period.

Incentives: Do Not Use an Outdated Tax-Credit Estimate

2026 buying note: The IRS states that the federal new, previously owned and qualified commercial clean vehicle credits are not available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Do not automatically subtract the old $7,500 new-EV or $4,000 used-EV credit from a current purchase.

Earlier qualifying acquisitions have separate timing considerations. Check the current IRS guidance. Verify any state, utility or manufacturer offer separately and include only incentives you qualify to receive.

How Long Will It Take for an EV to Pay Back Its Extra Cost?

If you already need a replacement vehicle, a simple starting calculation is:

Additional upfront EV cost ÷ annual net operating savings = simple payback period.

Suppose the EV and its charging setup cost $5,000 more than your alternative. At $1,060 in annual energy savings, the energy-only payback is approximately 4.7 years.

If insurance costs $600 more a year, the remaining savings fall to $460. Payback becomes approximately 10.9 years, before accounting for maintenance differences, financing, registration or resale value.

This is a screening calculation, not a complete ownership forecast. Lower maintenance costs could improve the result; other expenses could worsen it. If the EV costs less upfront, there may be no purchase premium to recover.

Run the Numbers With Lower Gas Prices Too

A vehicle purchase may last years beyond today's fuel-price spike. In the same example, $3 gasoline reduces annual energy savings from $1,060 to $660. At $5 gasoline, they rise to $1,460.

Annual mileage matters just as much. At 6,000 miles, the $4-gasoline example produces only $530 in energy savings. At 18,000 miles, it produces $1,590, assuming the same efficiency and charging price.

Could a Hybrid Be the Better Deal?

A conventional hybrid deserves a place in the comparison if convenient, affordable charging is unavailable. In our example, a 50-mpg hybrid uses $960 in gasoline over 12,000 miles at $4 per gallon.

The EV charged at $0.15 per kWh still wins on energy cost, but its advantage over that hybrid is only $420 a year. Purchase price and other expenses can easily decide the overall result.

A plug-in hybrid needs its own calculation: estimate how many miles you will drive on electricity and how many on gasoline. Do not budget as though every mile will be electric if you rarely plan to charge.

Your Before-You-Buy Checklist

  1. Measure your driving. Use your annual mileage and actual fuel economy.
  2. Price your charging routine. Include home, work and road-trip charging in realistic proportions.
  3. Get written quotes. Collect vehicle prices, financing terms, insurance costs and any charging installation estimate.
  4. Compare the same ownership period. Include resale value and avoid counting purchase costs twice.
  5. Test a less favorable scenario. Use lower gasoline prices, higher charging costs and fewer annual miles.
  6. Compare keeping your current car. Include its expected repairs and remaining useful life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are EVs always cheaper to drive than gas cars?

No. Charging price and efficiency determine energy cost. An efficient EV on affordable home electricity can have a large advantage, while expensive public charging can cost more per mile than gasoline in an efficient car.

Can an EV save money if I cannot charge at home?

Yes, if you have dependable, reasonably priced charging elsewhere. Check workplace and nearby public options, including fees and availability. Build the comparison around those actual prices.

Is a used EV a better way to save money?

A lower purchase price can improve the calculation. Compare the specific vehicle's condition, battery health, warranty, insurance and charging suitability with your alternatives. A low advertised price alone does not establish the best deal.

Should I buy an EV just because gas reaches $5 a gallon?

That price strengthens the energy-savings case, but it does not settle the purchase decision. Calculate savings using your mileage, charging rates and vehicle costs, then repeat the calculation with lower gasoline prices.

Does MPGe tell me how much charging will cost?

No. MPGe compares energy efficiency, not your electricity bill. For a cost estimate, use the vehicle's electricity consumption and the charging rate you expect to pay.

Before You Trade In Your Car

High gas prices are a reason to run the numbers. An EV can be a strong financial choice when the purchase price, charging access and mileage work in your favor.

Start with three numbers: your annual miles, your realistic charging rate and the cost of switching vehicles. If the savings still hold up after insurance, installation and a lower-gas-price scenario, you have a much stronger reason to buy.
