AAA Fuel Delivery: Is the Gas Free—and How Much Do You Get?

AAA can bring emergency fuel when you run out, but “free fuel delivery” does not always mean free gas. Classic members commonly pay for the fuel, while Plus and Premier benefits generally include an emergency supply at no additional charge. Your regional club’s terms control.

How much gas does AAA bring? Enough to reach a nearby station—not a full tank. Do not count on a guaranteed nationwide amount such as two gallons, or assume premium gasoline and diesel are available everywhere.

Before dispatch, confirm three things: the fuel type, whether you must pay for it, and what happens if delivery cannot get you moving.

In This Guide

Roadside emergency fuel delivery for a stranded vehicle

How Much Gas Does AAA Bring You?

AAA’s published benefit is generally described as enough emergency fuel to reach the nearest service station. That is more useful than treating “one or two gallons” as a promise that applies to every vehicle and location.

The amount provided can depend on the regional benefit, available supply and circumstances. A nearby station and a remote highway stop are different situations. Tell dispatch if the nearest station is far away or closed.

Think of it as a bridge to a fuel station. Once the vehicle is running, head to a suitable open station rather than continuing your trip on the emergency supply.

Can You Ask AAA for More Gas?

You can ask what quantity is available, but membership does not entitle you to a full tank or unlimited fuel. Explain your location and the distance to an open station before the provider arrives.

If the available fuel will not solve the problem, ask about towing rather than discovering the limitation after delivery.

Is AAA Fuel Delivery Free?

Separate the delivery service from the fuel purchase. A covered roadside call can include bringing fuel to you while leaving you responsible for the gasoline itself.

AAA Auto Club Group’s published guidance says Classic members pay the current pump price for fuel, while Plus and Premier members receive enough to reach the nearest open service station without a fuel charge. Confirm the rule for your membership and service location.

Classic vs Plus vs Premier

Membership Delivery Fuel Itself
Classic or equivalent basic tier Generally included for an eligible roadside request Commonly paid by the member
Plus Generally included for an eligible request Emergency supply generally included
Premier Generally included for an eligible request Emergency supply generally included; not unlimited fuel

These are common benefit arrangements, not a substitute for your club’s current handbook. Service-call allowances, vehicle eligibility and other conditions still apply.

How Much Extra Do Classic Members Pay?

There is no single nationwide dollar amount to quote. Ask for the fuel price, quantity and total expected charge before service.

For example, a handbook that specifies current pump pricing is different from an unsupported claim that AAA always adds a particular markup. Do not assume either a surcharge or a guaranteed discount.

Does Free Fuel Use One of Your Roadside Calls?

Fuel being included does not make the assistance unlimited. Ask how the request counts against your membership allowance, especially if you have already used several services.

Also ask how the call is recorded if fuel delivery is followed by towing. Do not assume every club handles a multi-stage request identically.

Read AAA Roadside Assistance Limits: Calls, Towing & Extra Charges.

Can AAA Bring Regular Gas, Premium or Diesel?

Tell dispatch exactly what the vehicle needs. “I need fuel” is not enough when the provider may carry only certain types.

Fuel Type What to Confirm
Regular gasoline Availability, quantity and any member charge
Premium gasoline Whether the required octane can be supplied
Diesel Whether delivery is offered locally or towing is required

Diesel rules demonstrate why location matters. AAA Mountain West Group advertises diesel delivery, while AAA Tidewater Virginia’s published member guide states that vehicles requiring diesel will be towed. Confirm the current arrangement for your request.

What If Your Car Requires Premium?

Give dispatch the minimum octane specified by your vehicle manufacturer. Premium availability is not a universal roadside promise.

“Premium recommended” and “premium required” are different instructions. Follow your owner’s manual for any emergency allowance rather than relying on a generic assurance that regular gasoline is always acceptable.

What If the Wrong Fuel Is Added?

Gasoline versus diesel is a different issue from choosing between gasoline octane grades. Confirm the fuel before it enters the tank.

If gasoline is put into a diesel vehicle, or diesel into a gasoline vehicle, do not start the engine. Tell the provider immediately and arrange professional assistance. If the engine is already running, stop safely and get advice rather than continuing to drive.

How Do You Request AAA Fuel Delivery?

Yes, AAA Can Bring Gas to Your Car

Request emergency roadside assistance through the AAA app, website or number on your membership card. Explain that the vehicle appears to have run out of fuel.

Provide:

  • Your exact location, direction of travel and nearby exit or landmark.
  • The vehicle’s make, model and fuel type.
  • Whether it is on a shoulder, in a parking area or blocking traffic.
  • Whether the engine stopped while driving or simply will not start.
  • Any unusual smell, leak or other safety concern.

Do not claim certainty if you are unsure. A low gauge and a no-start can point toward an empty tank, but they do not rule out another fault.

What Should You Do While Waiting?

If the vehicle can still move, reach a safer stopping place without abrupt maneuvers. Turn on the hazard lights and make your location clear.

Choose a waiting position based on the actual surroundings. Do not stand beside passing traffic or behind the vehicle. Exit away from traffic only when safe and reach a protected location. If exiting is unsafe, remain belted and follow emergency responders’ instructions.

Call emergency services if there is an immediate danger, such as being stranded in a live traffic lane. Do not walk along a dangerous highway shoulder to buy fuel.

How Long Will AAA Take?

Use the estimate supplied for your request. Weather, traffic, location, demand and provider availability affect arrival time. A generic promise of a particular response time is not reliable.

If your location becomes unsafe while waiting, update dispatch rather than simply waiting out the original estimate.

When Is Towing Better Than Fuel Delivery?

Delivery is useful when an emergency supply of the correct fuel can safely get the vehicle running and to a station. Towing may be necessary when:

  • The correct fuel is unavailable.
  • The location cannot be serviced safely.
  • A suitable open station cannot reasonably be reached with the available supply.
  • The vehicle will not restart after fuel is added.
  • A leak, wrong-fuel incident or another fault makes driving inappropriate.

Running a diesel vehicle dry may require a manufacturer-specific restart or priming procedure. Avoid repeated cranking; let the provider assess what is appropriate.

A tow is still subject to towing terms. Confirm the destination, covered mileage and any extra-mile charge before agreeing.

See AAA Towing Cost: Is Free Towing Really Free?

What If You Already Paid Another Provider?

Keep the itemized receipt, but do not assume reimbursement is automatic. Contact AAA first when practical and ask about authorization and documentation requirements.

Read AAA Towing Reimbursement: Paid for a Tow?

Five Questions to Ask Before Accepting Service

  1. Is this request covered by my active membership? Confirm eligibility and remaining service allowance.
  2. Is the fuel itself included? Ask separately from whether delivery is included.
  3. What fuel and quantity are coming? Specify gasoline grade or diesel as appropriate.
  4. What will I pay? Request the expected total and accepted payment method.
  5. What happens if delivery does not solve it? Confirm the towing alternative and applicable charges.

A useful way to ask: “My vehicle needs this fuel type. Is that available, is the fuel covered under my plan, and will the amount get me to an open station?”

The Mistake Most Likely to Cause a Surprise

Assuming that “included roadside assistance” means every part of the rescue is free. Fuel purchases, excess service requests and towing beyond covered limits are separate questions.

Get those answers before dispatch where possible—not after fuel has been added or a tow has started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does AAA bring one gallon or two gallons?

Do not treat either amount as a nationwide guarantee. Ask what the provider will supply for your request. AAA’s commonly published benefit is an emergency quantity intended to reach a nearby station.

Can AAA fill my entire tank?

Emergency delivery is not a full-tank refueling service. Go to a suitable station after receiving assistance.

Can I use AAA fuel delivery in a rental car?

Membership can provide assistance in eligible vehicles beyond your own car, subject to the terms. Check the rental agreement and any required roadside process. Emergency fuel assistance does not cancel rental-company return-fuel requirements or charges. See AAA Roadside Assistance for Rental Cars.

Can I join AAA after running out of gas?

Ask the local club before buying. Waiting periods, immediate-service fees and restrictions can apply. A membership purchase or upgrade does not automatically provide immediate standard coverage for an existing breakdown.

Should I tip the fuel-delivery driver?

A tip is optional and separate from any fuel or service charge. Ask whether the provider accepts tips if you wish to offer one.

Is AAA cheaper through Costco or with a senior discount?

Offers vary by club, location, eligibility and date. Compare an actual current offer with your renewal quote, including household members and renewal pricing. Neither a Costco discount nor a senior rate should be assumed nationwide.

Is a more expensive AAA plan worth it for free gas?

Compare the annual upgrade price with the benefits you realistically need. A small emergency fuel allowance alone may not justify a higher membership cost. Towing distance and other services may matter more.

What if my car still will not start?

Stop treating the empty tank as a confirmed explanation. Ask the provider to assess the next step, which may be towing to a repair facility. Avoid repeatedly trying to start the engine.

Know What Is Included Before the Truck Arrives

AAA fuel delivery can solve an empty-tank emergency, but the important details are your fuel type, membership terms and route to an open station.

Confirm the fuel charge and backup towing plan first. That makes the service more useful and reduces the chance of turning a simple rescue into an unexpected bill.

AAA Flat Tire Service: Does AAA Patch Tires—or Just Change the Spare?

Does AAA patch tires? Usually, no. Standard AAA flat tire service generally means installing your usable spare tire or arranging a tow when a tire change is not possible. You normally still need a tire shop to inspect and repair the damaged tire.

There are local exceptions: some AAA clubs advertise limited on-site tire repairs. But do not assume the truck arriving at your location can patch a puncture, supply a spare or install a brand-new tire.

Before requesting help, tell AAA whether you have a spare, whether it holds air and whether your wheels need a locking lug nut key. Those details can determine whether you need a tire-service vehicle or a tow truck.

In This Guide

Roadside assistance for a flat tire

Does AAA Patch or Plug Tires?

Do not count on AAA performing a permanent tire repair at the roadside. Installing a spare and fixing the damaged tire are different services.

A spare-tire change replaces the entire wheel-and-tire assembly with the spare you already carry. A permanent puncture repair requires removing the damaged tire from its wheel, inspecting the inside and repairing an eligible puncture.

AAA Mountain West Group explicitly states that its roadside service does not patch or plug tires. However, AAA Western and Central New York says on-site repairs may be available in some situations. Ask the dispatcher what is available where you are; a local exception is not a nationwide benefit.

Ask this: “Can your provider repair this tire here, or should I expect a spare-tire change or tow?”

Also distinguish AAA roadside assistance from a AAA-owned or AAA Approved Auto Repair shop. A shop may offer tire repairs, but that does not make the repair an included roadside membership benefit.

What Does AAA Do When You Have a Flat Tire?

Your Situation Likely Next Step What to Tell Dispatch
You have a usable spare Spare installation if the location and vehicle are safe to service Where the spare and wheel lock key are stored
You have no spare Towing, unless another suitable local service is available That a normal tire change will not solve the problem
Your spare is low on air Inflation may make it usable if it is otherwise sound Whether it is simply low or visibly damaged
You have two flat tires Usually towing if you cannot provide enough suitable spares How many tires are affected
A wheel lock key is missing Wheel removal may be impossible; towing may be needed That the wheel has a locking lug nut
The wheel is bent or the location is unsafe Recovery or towing rather than an ordinary tire change Any collision damage or immediate traffic danger

What Does AAA Do If You Have a Flat Tire and No Spare?

Expect towing to be the practical solution. Many cars carry an inflator and sealant kit instead of a spare. Others use run-flat tires. Neither arrangement guarantees that you can continue after every puncture or blowout.

AAA generally does not bring a spare that fits your car. Tell dispatch you have no spare before a provider is assigned, and ask whether a tow can be arranged directly.

Choose a destination that can handle the repair. Before requesting a particular tire shop, check whether it is open, accepts incoming tows and has your tire size available if replacement is likely. An after-hours drop-off may need permission and instructions.

Ask how much of that tow your membership covers and what the extra mileage will cost. Do not assume every destination is included.

Related: Why New Cars Are Ditching Spare Tires.

What If Your Spare Is Flat?

A low spare does not automatically mean towing. A technician may be able to inflate it. A cracked, damaged, incorrect or leaking spare is a different problem and may be unsafe to install.

Check spare pressure before a trip using the vehicle instructions. Compact spares often require a different pressure from the regular tires.

What If Your Jack or Lug Wrench Is Missing?

Tell dispatch, but do not assume missing ordinary tools automatically prevent service: roadside providers generally carry service equipment. Vehicle-specific items can be more important, including a wheel lock key or a special tool needed to release an underbody spare.

Read what to do when your wheel lock key is missing.

Does AAA Charge to Fix a Flat Tire?

A covered spare-tire installation is generally included in your active roadside membership. That does not mean AAA pays for the damaged tire.

Your membership terms determine eligibility, service-call allowances, covered vehicles and towing benefits. Confirm those details with your local club rather than relying on another region’s advertised plan.

Expense What to Expect
Covered spare installation Generally included as a roadside service call
Tow because there is no usable spare Subject to membership towing terms and distance limits
Permanent puncture repair at a shop Separate from standard roadside service; ask the shop about pricing or free repair
Replacement tire Normally your expense unless separate coverage applies
Damaged wheel, valve or TPMS sensor Separate diagnosis and repair charges may apply

For an ordinary repairable puncture, a shop repair usually costs much less than replacing the tire. Request a complete quote that identifies inspection, repair, mounting, balancing and any additional work.

Does Anyone Repair Flat Tires for Free?

Yes. Discount Tire advertises free repairs for most repairable punctures, including tires purchased elsewhere. The tire must pass inspection and meet repair guidelines.

Free repair does not mean every damaged tire qualifies, and it does not pay for getting your car to the store. Check with the location before arranging a tow.

See where to get free tire repair and how AAA towing costs and mileage limits work.

What Should You Do Before AAA Arrives?

  1. Stop as safely as possible. Avoid abrupt braking or steering. Move out of the traffic lane if you can do so safely, then stop. Continuing on a flat can destroy the tire and damage the wheel.
  2. Make your location clear. Provide the road name, direction of travel, nearest exit or landmark, and your phone location when available.
  3. Explain any immediate danger. Tell dispatch if you are in a live lane, on a narrow shoulder or unable to reach a safe position. Call emergency services for an immediate threat.
  4. Choose the safer place to wait. Do not stand beside traffic or behind the vehicle. Exit away from traffic only when safe and reach a protected location. If exiting is unsafe, remain belted and follow emergency responders’ instructions.
  5. Check equipment only if safe. Locate the spare and wheel lock key without exposing yourself to passing vehicles.
  6. Confirm the service plan. Ask whether the provider is coming to change a tire or tow the car, and confirm any expected charge.

Do not crawl under the vehicle, jack it up on unstable ground or attempt a roadside plug while exposed to traffic. A repairable puncture is not worth a roadside injury.

How Long Does AAA Take to Change a Flat?

Separate the arrival estimate from the work itself. Weather, demand, location and provider availability affect how long you wait. Seized lug nuts, a stuck wheel or an inaccessible spare can make the job take longer after arrival.

Use the estimate supplied for your actual request. A general promise such as “AAA always arrives within 30 minutes” is not reliable.

Can AAA Help With a Nail in the Tire?

Yes, you can request assistance, but a visible nail does not establish whether the tire is repairable. Do not pull it out while waiting; doing so may increase the air leak.

A tire professional must inspect the damage, including the inside of the tire. A small puncture in the permitted tread area may qualify. Shoulder or sidewall damage, excessive wear, deterioration or internal damage can rule out repair.

Passenger-tire repair guidance commonly limits repairable tread punctures to about 1/4 inch (6 mm), subject to the tire maker’s restrictions. Size alone is not enough to approve a repair.

Is a Plug Cheaper Than a Patch?

An external plug can be cheaper and faster, but the price comparison misses the main issue: a plug alone or patch alone is not the recommended complete permanent repair. A proper repair seals the inner liner and fills the puncture channel after internal inspection.

Do not accept a roadside plug as proof that the tire has no hidden damage, particularly if it was driven while flat.

Read when a puncture is too close to the sidewall and the limits of DIY tire repair kits.

Can You Drive Normally After AAA Installs the Spare?

Follow the spare’s label and your owner’s manual. A temporary spare has operating restrictions and is intended to get you to a suitable repair, not replace a regular tire indefinitely.

AWD vehicles can have additional requirements for spare placement and tire-size differences. Run-flat tires also have model-specific limits after pressure loss. Tell the provider your vehicle type and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Once the damaged tire is repaired or replaced, return the spare to storage and make sure it is ready for the next emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will AAA come out and patch my tire?

Usually, expect spare installation or towing. Limited on-site repairs exist in some AAA service areas, so ask dispatch what the local provider can do.

Will AAA help with a flat tire at home?

AAA Mountain West Group lists home tire assistance among its services. Check your club’s terms and explain access restrictions, such as a low parking garage or blocked driveway.

Can I join AAA after getting a flat tire?

Ask the local club before purchasing. Waiting periods, immediate-service fees and restrictions can apply. Buying a membership does not automatically make an existing breakdown eligible for immediate standard coverage.

Will roadside assistance bring me a new tire?

Do not assume so. Standard spare installation uses the spare you supply. Specialized mobile tire services may operate separately in certain areas, with their own availability and charges.

How long will a properly repaired tire last?

An approved permanent repair may allow continued service for the tire’s remaining usable life. It does not reverse damage, restore worn tread or guarantee a particular mileage. Follow the tire manufacturer’s repair restrictions.

Is tipping required for a tire change?

A tip is not a condition of your covered service. If you wish to offer one, ask whether the provider can accept it.

Before Your Next Flat, Check Three Things

Know whether your car has a usable spare, keep the wheel lock key accessible and understand your towing coverage. When a flat happens, tell dispatch what equipment you have so the first service vehicle has the best chance of solving the problem.

Plan for a spare change or tow, then a tire-shop inspection. If local roadside repair is available, confirm exactly what service is being offered and whether further inspection is needed.

Rear Bumper Hanging After an Accident: Can You Drive—or Do You Need a Tow?

You have been rear-ended, and part of your bumper is hanging off. The engine starts, the car moves, and the body shop is nearby. Can you drive there—or should you call a tow truck?

If the bumper is dragging, touching a tire, blocking required lights, or could fall into traffic, arrange a tow. Removing or tying up the loose plastic does not prove that the rest of the car is safe.

A slightly displaced bumper cover may be a relatively small repair. But a rear-end collision can also damage brackets, the impact absorber, reinforcement, wiring or safety sensors. Make the transportation decision before worrying about the final repair bill.

Rear Bumper Hanging After an Accident

Can You Drive With a Hanging Rear Bumper?

A hanging bumper is a reason to stop and assess the vehicle—not permission to drive slowly. A loose part can shift with vibration or airflow even if it clears the road while parked.

What you see or notice What to do
The bumper cover drags, scrapes or could detach Arrange a tow; do not continue to the shop
Plastic or metal touches a tire, or a wheel appears displaced Tow and have the wheel, suspension and surrounding damage inspected
Required rear lights are broken or obstructed Do not continue normal road travel; arrange assistance
A plate is obscured, wiring hangs down, or sharp pieces project outward Have the condition assessed and corrected before considering road travel
Fuel smell, an unexplained leak, smoke, unusual heat or hissing Stop, keep people away as appropriate, and contact emergency services if there is a fire or other immediate hazard
Braking, steering or handling changed after the collision Tow; do not test the car at higher speeds
Only a minor cover displacement, with secure attachment and no other identified problems A qualified assessment may support a short trip; appearance alone cannot establish safety

“It still drives” is not a safety inspection. If you cannot confidently rule out loose parts, wheel interference or other collision damage, choose a tow.

What to Do Immediately After Being Rear-Ended

  1. Check for injuries and immediate hazards. Call emergency services when needed.
  2. Follow instructions from responders. Moving a vehicle out of traffic, when safe and appropriate, is different from deciding to drive several miles to a shop.
  3. Document the scene from a safe location. Photograph the vehicle, hanging cover, lights, wheels and visible damage. Do not stand in traffic for a better picture.
  4. Exchange information and follow local reporting requirements. Keep the other driver’s details, insurance information and any report number.
  5. Call your insurer or roadside provider. Explain that the rear bumper is partly detached and ask about transportation.

AAA’s collision guidance distinguishes moving a drivable vehicle to a safe location from remaining at the scene and completing the necessary collision steps.

Can You Remove the Hanging Bumper to Reach the Body Shop?

Do not assume the hanging section is an empty plastic shell. It may still have electrical connectors, parking sensors, reflectors, trim or other attachments. Pulling it free can tear wiring and create additional damage.

Ask a roadside technician or body shop whether the loose section can be safely secured or removed. Even after that work, the vehicle still needs assessment for collision damage and any road-use requirements that apply locally.

What About Zip Ties or Tape?

A temporary attachment is not a crash repair and does not establish roadworthiness. Tape can loosen, damaged mounting tabs may break further, and a piece that appears secure while parked may move once the car is underway.

Do not attach loose plastic to exhaust parts, suspension components, brake lines or unidentified wiring. Avoid covering sensor areas with tape or other materials.

For older drivers, anyone with limited mobility, or anyone without the right tools, calling for assistance is the practical choice. There is no need to kneel beside traffic, lift the vehicle or struggle with sharp plastic to save a tow.

Do not crawl beneath a collision-damaged vehicle or use its damaged bumper as a lifting point. Photograph the damage before professional removal, when it is safe to do so.

Why “Just Plastic” Can Hide a Bigger Problem

The visible bumper cover, often called the fascia, is different from the energy-management components behind it. Depending on the vehicle, those may include an absorber, reinforcement, brackets and attachment structures.

A cover can spring partly back into shape after a hit while concealed components remain damaged. Conversely, broken cover clips do not automatically mean the vehicle has structural damage.

The repair shop should distinguish:

  • Broken clips, retainers or mounting tabs.
  • A cracked or torn bumper cover.
  • Damaged absorbers, reinforcement or brackets.
  • Rear body, wheel, suspension or exhaust damage.
  • Damaged wiring, sensors or sensor mounts.

Read Minor Rear Bumper Damage: Sensors, Brackets and What Really Needs Repair for the repair decision after transportation is arranged.

EVs Are Not the Only Cars With Bumper Sensors

Gas, hybrid and electric vehicles can have parking sensors or radar units in or behind the rear bumper. A reversing camera may be mounted elsewhere, such as the trunk lid or liftgate; not every camera is attached to the bumper.

A damaged bracket can change sensor positioning. Repair materials and paint in a radar transmission area may also affect performance.

For example, Honda’s 2023 Accord body-repair guidance identifies rear-bumper radar zones where cracks or dents require bumper replacement. This is a vehicle-specific restriction, not a rule that every damaged bumper must be replaced.

I-CAR explains that repair materials, excessive coating thickness and metallic or reflective coverings can interfere with some blind-spot radar systems. A temporary cosmetic fix is not proof that those systems work correctly.

Ask the shop which inspections, scans, functional checks or calibrations the manufacturer requires. See $1,500 Bumper Calibration? Why ADAS Calibration Costs So Much.

Does a Hanging Bumper Require a Flatbed Tow?

A flatbed may be appropriate, but it is not the only approved method for every vehicle. The tow operator should follow the manufacturer’s transport instructions and account for the collision damage.

Give the dispatcher the make, model, drivetrain and condition. Mention displaced wheels, leaks, low clearance, an unsecured bumper and whether the vehicle can roll.

For example, the Tesla Model 3 transport instructions recommend a flatbed and describe an alternative using wheel lifts and dollies with all four wheels off the ground. Those instructions must not be generalized to every EV or AWD car.

For an EV with suspected battery damage, unusual heat, smoke or hissing, contact emergency services and tell the dispatcher it is electric. Do not touch exposed high-voltage components or attempt to remove damaged electrical parts.

Is a Loose Rear Bumper Expensive to Fix?

A repair limited to replaceable retainers can be substantially different from replacing a painted cover and damaged components behind it. There is no dependable universal price for “a hanging bumper.”

Repair finding What may be included in the bill
Intact cover with broken retainers Inspection, clips or brackets, removal and refitting
Repairable cover damage Permitted plastic repair, preparation, paint and refitting
Cover requires replacement Replacement cover, paint, trim and attachment parts
Damaged absorber, reinforcement or rear body Additional parts, measurements and collision-repair labor
Sensor or mounting damage Diagnosis, parts and required checks or calibration

Ask for an itemized estimate after inspection. A photo quote may change when the cover is removed and concealed damage becomes visible.

For electric vehicles, see EV Bumper Repair vs Replacement: Cost, Safety and Insurance.

Will Insurance Cover Bumper Damage and Towing?

Bumper Repairs

Your collision coverage generally applies to accident damage, subject to policy terms and your deductible. If another driver is responsible, their property-damage liability coverage may pay, subject to the claim investigation and limits.

Comprehensive coverage is generally for non-collision events, such as a falling tree branch. It is not the usual coverage for being rear-ended.

Progressive’s bumper-damage guidance explains the collision-versus-comprehensive distinction and why repair costs below a deductible may not produce a payment.

Accident Towing

A necessary accident-related tow may be payable through applicable collision coverage or the responsible driver’s liability coverage. A roadside add-on may provide a separate benefit. Approval, limits and reimbursement procedures depend on the policy.

GEICO distinguishes accident-related towing from routine breakdown towing. Do not assume every tow is automatically included.

When the situation allows, ask:

  • Who should arrange the tow?
  • Which destination and distance are authorized?
  • Will payment be direct or reimbursed?
  • Are loading, storage or additional transport charges covered?
  • What documents should you retain?

Keep the itemized tow receipt and confirm the vehicle’s destination. Do not delay emergency assistance while waiting for a coverage decision.

If using AAA, confirm your club’s collision assistance and plan limits. Read AAA Roadside Assistance Limits and AAA Towing Cost: Is Free Towing Really Free?.

What Should You Tell the Insurance Company?

Give an accurate account of what you observed: when and where the collision occurred, where the car was struck, visible damage and why a tow was needed.

Do not guess about speed, fault, hidden damage or injuries. Avoid prematurely describing the damage as “only cosmetic” when the vehicle has not been inspected. If you do not know something, say so.

Be truthful and correct mistakes promptly. Keeping your explanation factual is different from hiding information or exaggerating the claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive a short distance with a hanging bumper?

Distance does not remove the hazard. If the part could detach, drag or touch a tire, arrange a tow. A short trip may be considered only after the vehicle and attachment have been appropriately assessed.

How do you fix a hanging bumper?

Identify why it detached. Intact parts may need replacement retainers or brackets; damaged tabs, a torn cover or concealed collision damage may require more work. Simply pushing it into place does not establish a lasting repair.

Is bumper damage considered an accident?

Damage caused by a collision is collision damage even if it appears minor. Bumper damage can also have other causes. Do not assume a minor collision is exempt from local reporting or policy notification requirements.

At what speed can a bumper be damaged?

There is no universal threshold. Impact direction, vehicle height, the object struck and bumper design affect damage. A low-speed collision can break attachments or damage components behind the cover.

How much will insurance pay?

Payment depends on covered damage, the approved repair scope, applicable limits and deductible. There is no standard payout for a rear bumper. Ask how additional damage discovered during disassembly will be documented.

How long does a rear-end collision settlement take?

There is no reliable single timeline. Liability disputes, inspections, additional damage and injuries can affect the process. A vehicle-damage payment and an injury settlement are different matters; ask which stage is awaiting action.

Can bumper damage cause a car to be written off?

Possibly, especially when the vehicle has a low value or the collision caused substantial hidden damage. Total-loss rules vary by state and are not determined solely by how dramatic the bumper looks. The Washington insurance regulator’s guide explains why repairability and vehicle value matter.

Make the Transportation Decision First

A hanging bumper that can drag, interfere with a wheel or fall into traffic calls for a tow. Removing the loose cover does not clear the rest of the car for driving.

Once the vehicle is safely at a shop, separate attachment damage from cover, structural and sensor repairs. That is how you avoid both an unnecessary replacement and an incomplete repair.

Motorcycle Won’t Start: Dead Battery or an Expensive Repair?

You turn the key, press the starter and hear clicking—or nothing at all. Is the battery discharged, or are you facing a costly starter, charging-system or engine repair?

Begin with what the motorcycle does when you press the starter. Silence, rapid clicking, slow cranking and strong cranking point toward different checks. None proves that a particular part has failed.

Before buying a battery or approving an expensive repair, check the starting controls, battery connections and battery condition. Then investigate the system that the symptoms actually point toward.

Motorcycle Won’t Start

Quick answer: Clicking or slow cranking makes battery and connection checks a sensible starting point. Silence can involve starting interlocks, power supply or the starter circuit. Strong cranking without firing calls for broader checks, including fuel, ignition and compression. Working lights do not prove the battery can start the engine.

In this guide

What Happens When You Press the Starter?

This guide concerns gasoline motorcycles, primarily those with electric starters. Electric motorcycles, older ignition systems and automatic-transmission models require different procedures.

Symptom First checks What it does not prove
No lights or dashboard power Battery charge, terminals, ground connection and main fuse. That the battery alone has failed.
Dashboard works, starter stays silent RUN switch, neutral, clutch, side stand, security system and starter controls. That the starter motor needs replacement.
Rapid clicking or dashboard resets Battery performance under load and connection quality. That the relay making the noise is defective.
One click without cranking Battery, cables and starter-circuit testing. That the solenoid is definitely bad.
Engine turns slowly Battery load test, connections and starter current draw. That a resting voltage reading establishes battery health.
Engine cranks normally but does not fire Fuel supply, ignition, starting procedure and stored faults. That the motorcycle needs major engine work.

Simple Checks Before Paying for Repairs

  1. Set the engine-stop switch to RUN. Check its marked position rather than assuming it has not moved.
  2. Follow the bike’s starting procedure. Confirm neutral, clutch and side-stand requirements in the owner’s manual.
  3. Check security authorization. A missing fob, weak fob battery or immobilizer warning may prevent starting.
  4. Confirm there is fuel. On an older bike, verify the fuel-tap setting and the correct choke or enrichment procedure.
  5. Inspect accessible battery connections. Loose or corroded terminals can interrupt starting power.
  6. Check the appropriate fuses. Use the manual to identify them. Test a removed fuse for continuity if its condition is unclear.

Replace a fuse only with the specified type and rating. If it blows again, stop replacing it and investigate the circuit. Do not fit a larger fuse or bypass a starting safety switch.

Harley-Davidson’s troubleshooting guidance identifies controls, safety switches, connections and fuses as useful initial checks. The exact arrangement varies by motorcycle.

Source: Harley-Davidson no-start guidance

“Above 12 Volts” Does Not Mean the Battery Is Fine

A battery can power the dashboard yet struggle when the starter demands much more current. It can also show an apparently reasonable resting voltage and fail under load.

For a conventional 12-volt lead-acid or AGM battery, a fully charged resting reading is commonly around 12.6–12.8 volts, depending on battery type and test conditions. A reading near 12.0 volts indicates substantial discharge rather than proof of a healthy battery.

These are screening values, not a universal pass/fail test. Recently charging the battery can also affect the reading.

What should the battery test include?

  • Resting voltage after following the battery manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Battery condition under starting load or an appropriate battery test.
  • Connection checks and voltage-drop testing when needed.
  • Charging-system evaluation if discharge keeps returning.

Lithium motorcycle batteries require their own specifications. Do not apply a lead-acid voltage chart or charger mode automatically.

Can You Bring a Completely Dead Motorcycle Battery Back to Life?

A discharged battery may recover. A failed or damaged battery may not. “Dead” describes the symptom without establishing which condition you have.

Use a charger suitable for the battery’s chemistry, voltage and capacity. Follow the battery and motorcycle instructions, including connection and ventilation requirements.

  • Do not charge a visibly damaged, leaking, swollen or frozen battery.
  • Do not use a high-output automotive fast-charge setting without explicit compatibility.
  • Do not use a lead-acid desulfation mode on a lithium battery unless its manufacturer permits it.
  • If a smart charger rejects the battery, do not improvise a bypass to force charging.

After charging, test whether it holds charge and can supply starting current. A successful start alone does not establish that recovery is complete.

Can you jump-start or push-start it?

Check the owner’s manual first. Jump-starting procedures and restrictions vary, and a compatible booster cannot repair a failed charging system or damaged battery.

Push-starting is also model-dependent. Some motorcycles need enough electrical power for the fuel pump and electronics even when the starter is bypassed. Automatic transmissions and other configurations may prevent the method entirely.

For an unfamiliar bike, a genuinely flat battery or an unsafe location, charging or roadside assistance is preferable to experimenting.

What Are the Symptoms of a Faulty Starter Solenoid?

The starter relay or solenoid switches power to the starter; terminology and component arrangements differ among motorcycles.

Possible symptoms include intermittent starting, a click without cranking, or no starter response. But a weak battery, poor ground, cable resistance or missing control signal can produce similar symptoms.

Before approving replacement, ask: “Did the battery pass testing? Were the cables and grounds checked? Does the relay receive the correct control signal, and does it deliver power to the starter?”

Do not bridge relay terminals with a screwdriver. That can create sparks, bypass safety controls or unexpectedly crank the engine.

The Battery Seems Fine and the Engine Cranks—Why Won’t It Start?

A running gasoline engine needs more than a charged battery: it needs an appropriate air-fuel mixture, ignition at the correct time and sufficient compression. Normal cranking does not prove that all these conditions exist.

Useful checks include:

  • Starting procedure: Especially choke or enrichment settings on carbureted bikes.
  • Fuel supply: Fuel level, tap operation, pump power and delivery.
  • Storage history: Old fuel, contamination or deposits may require attention.
  • Ignition and controls: Plugs, wiring, sensors, immobilizer and stored faults.
  • Mechanical condition: Compression or valve timing when earlier tests justify checking them.

A silent fuel pump is a clue, not proof that the pump has failed. Verify its electrical supply and the model’s normal priming behavior before replacing it.

Use short starting attempts within the manual’s limits. Repeated extended cranking can drain the battery and overheat starting components. Stop if you notice leaking fuel, smoke or abnormal mechanical sounds.

Does Idling a Motorcycle Charge the Battery?

It may provide some charge, but idling is not a dependable way to recharge a discharged battery. Output at idle may leave little available after the motorcycle’s own electrical demand.

Use a compatible charger for controlled recovery. Short periodic starts during storage may consume more energy than the brief run replaces.

What if a charged or new battery goes flat again?

The cause could be a charging fault, excessive accessory demand, a parked electrical drain, poor connections or a battery problem.

Have the system tested at the specified engine speed and electrical load. Diagnosis may involve the stator, regulator/rectifier, connectors and wiring. Do not assume a universal running-voltage target applies to every motorcycle.

Will it stay running with a dead battery?

It depends on the design and the failure. A battery too weak to crank is different from one with an internal fault. Some older systems can operate differently from modern fuel-injected motorcycles.

Do not rely on the engine staying running after a boost, and never disconnect the battery while running as a test. If the bike stalled with a discharged battery, diagnose the cause before riding again.

When Does a No-Start Problem Become Expensive?

The cost depends on the failed component, access, parts availability and labor. A universal $400–$500 estimate for stator or regulator repair is unreliable across motorcycle models.

Repair direction What affects the bill Evidence to request
Battery or connection problem Battery type, access and cable condition. Battery-test results and connection findings.
Starter relay or motor Component price, access and related wiring. Control-signal, voltage-drop and starter testing.
Charging-system fault Stator access, regulator and connector damage. Measurements compared with the service specifications.
Fuel-system repair Carburetor count, pump access and contamination. Fuel-delivery tests or inspection findings.
Compression or timing problem Engine design and extent of internal work. Compression, leak-down or timing-check results.

Ask for an itemized estimate separating diagnosis, parts and labor. Paying for a clear diagnosis can cost less than replacing the battery, relay and starter in succession.

If you are stranded, verify that your roadside plan covers motorcycles and the service you need. Car jump-start coverage does not automatically establish motorcycle benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a motorcycle sit before the battery goes flat?

There is no fixed period. Charge level, battery condition, temperature and parked electrical loads all matter. Yuasa recommends maintenance charging when storing a motorcycle for more than 30 days; that is a maintenance recommendation, not a guarantee that every battery lasts 30 days.

Source: Yuasa battery storage FAQ

Why won’t it start when the lights work?

The starter needs substantially more current than the lights. Test battery performance under load and the connections before deciding the battery is healthy.

Does clicking mean I need a new battery?

No. It makes battery and connection checks worthwhile, but the battery may only need charging. Test it before replacing it.

Can a blown fuse stop a motorcycle from starting?

Yes. The affected fuse determines which systems lose power. Replace only with the specified rating and investigate if the replacement also blows.

Should I buy a starter if the battery passed testing?

Not without testing the starting circuit. Interlocks, security authorization, controls, cables and the relay can still prevent cranking.

Can I ride after a successful jump-start?

A successful boost does not establish reliable operation. Consider why the battery discharged, verify the bike’s instructions and have recurring discharge or charging faults checked before riding.

What to Do Before Buying Parts

Record whether the starter is silent, clicks, turns slowly or cranks normally. Check the controls and connections, then obtain battery testing appropriate to its chemistry.

Let the test results determine the repair. A no-start condition deserves diagnosis before an expensive parts order—and a recurring dead battery deserves more than another recharge.

AAA Renewal Too Expensive? Should You Cancel or Wait for a Better Offer?

Last year’s AAA membership looked like a bargain. This year’s renewal notice is much less appealing. If you joined with a promotional price or discounted family memberships, you may be wondering whether to renew, ask for a discount or let the membership expire and wait.

One owner shared this experience with MechanicInsights: they paid $42 for three people last year and declined this year’s renewal, expecting a lower offer later. That raises a useful question: can waiting save money, and what happens to roadside coverage in the meantime?

Woman reviewing a roadside membership renewal notice and checking her phone beside her parked car.

Quick answer: Ask your AAA club for its best eligible renewal price before letting coverage lapse. Compare the same membership level and number of people, and consider a downgrade if appropriate. A later offer might be cheaper, but neither the offer nor your eligibility is guaranteed. Waiting also means planning for roadside help during the gap.

U.S. membership information checked September 15, 2026. AAA pricing, promotions and membership rules vary by regional club. The $42 example is an owner-reported past purchase, not a current advertised offer.

In This Guide

Why Is Your AAA Renewal More Expensive Than Last Year?

A higher renewal bill does not necessarily mean the underlying membership rate increased by the same amount. It may reflect the end of discounts that reduced your original purchase.

Ask your club to break the bill into:

  • Primary membership dues: The charge for the main member.
  • Associate membership dues: Charges for other covered household members.
  • Membership level: Basic or Classic, Plus, Premier or another local option.
  • Extras: Any optional coverage or added services.
  • Expired discounts: Introductory, associate-member or one-time enrollment savings.

A Discounted First Year May Not Repeat

For example, AAA Mountain West Group’s published promotion states that certain associate-membership discounts apply only in the first year, with regular associate dues charged at renewal. Its offer also includes new-member eligibility conditions.

That illustrates how a low household signup price can become a larger renewal bill. It does not establish which promotion produced the owner’s $42 purchase.

Source: AAA Mountain West Group membership promotional terms.

Compare like with like: A renewal covering three people should be compared with a new offer covering the same three eligible people at the same service level. A low advertised price for one primary member is not an equivalent quote.

Will AAA Send You a Cheaper Offer After You Cancel?

It is possible, but you should not count on it. A future promotion or targeted offer may be attractive. There is no verified nationwide promise that declining renewal produces a lower price within a set number of months.

Even if a discount arrives, check whether it is:

  • Available to renewing members or only eligible new members.
  • Addressed specifically to your account.
  • For the same membership level.
  • Inclusive of the household members you need.
  • Conditional on automatic renewal.
  • Subject to fees or a restricted enrollment window.

Do not assume that letting membership expire immediately makes you a new customer. For example, the Mountain West promotion reviewed for this article excludes certain recent primary and associate members.

The tradeoff: Waiting for a discount means accepting a period without that active membership unless you arrange other coverage. Do not build your plan around joining again only after the car breaks down.

How to Ask AAA for a Lower Renewal Price

Contact the membership team using the number on your card or your club’s official website. Explain that the renewal price has changed your decision, then ask what options apply to your account.

  1. Have both prices ready. Compare last year’s receipt with the current renewal notice.
  2. Confirm the same coverage. Check the plan level and every primary or associate member.
  3. Ask about eligible offers. Request any current renewal, household or retention discount available to you.
  4. Request a lower-tier quote. Compare benefits before accepting a downgrade.
  5. Get the final total. Confirm the amount due, membership dates and automatic-renewal conditions.

Call script: “I paid $42 for three members last year, and the renewal is higher than I want to pay. What is the best eligible price for the same three people? Are there renewal discounts or a lower-cost membership level? Please confirm the total and whether it requires automatic renewal.”

A representative may have an offer, or may only be able to explain the existing rate. Asking is useful; a discount is not guaranteed.

Should You Renew, Downgrade or Wait?

Option When It May Make Sense What to Check
Renew at the quoted price You rely on the coverage and the total is acceptable Whether an eligible discount is available first
Renew with a discount The reduced quote provides the coverage you need Duration, household members and future renewal terms
Downgrade You can accept reduced benefits for lower dues Towing distance, service limits and when the change takes effect
Remove an associate member That person has adequate independent coverage or no longer needs membership Their resulting roadside arrangements and eligibility rules
Let membership expire You have a workable alternative and accept the gap Actual expiration, rejoining conditions and total alternative cost

Downgrading deserves a careful look at towing benefits. A lower annual fee can be less useful if the included tow will not reach your preferred repair shop. Read AAA Towing Cost: Is Free Towing Really Free? and AAA Roadside Assistance Limits: Calls, Towing and Extra Charges.

A Simple Savings Check

Subtract the discounted price you could actually obtain from the renewal quote. Then account for any alternative coverage, rejoining fees and out-of-pocket roadside expense during the gap.

Illustration only: A $120 renewal compared with a $70 offer represents $50 in potential savings. If a roadside incident during the gap costs you $100 that would otherwise have been covered, the waiting strategy costs more overall. These figures are examples, not AAA quotes.

Canceling Auto-Renewal Is Not the Same as Ending Membership Today

Be specific about what you want:

  • Turn off automatic renewal: Stop the next automatic payment and confirm when existing benefits end.
  • Cancel the membership: Ask for the effective cancellation date and whether a refund applies.
  • Decline a renewal quote: Confirm whether that conversation actually changed the payment instructions.

Do not assume saying “no thanks” to an offer disables an existing automatic payment. Request confirmation and check your account.

Timing matters. AAA Club Alliance’s terms say it generally charges automatic renewal about 35 days before the renewal date. Other clubs use different arrangements, so act when the notice arrives rather than waiting until the printed expiration date.

Source: AAA Club Alliance renewal terms.

AAA Club Alliance also recommends retaining the cancellation confirmation. Use your own club’s instructions rather than assuming another region’s website process applies.

Source: AAA’s cancellation checklist.

What Should You Check Before Letting Membership Lapse?

Waiting Periods and Immediate-Service Fees

Joining or rejoining does not necessarily make every benefit available immediately. AAA Club Alliance, for example, publishes a seven-day wait for enhanced Plus, RV and Premier services, with Classic-level service during that period.

Its membership policies also list an immediate-service fee in specified situations involving joining or returning after a lapse. These are regional examples, not nationwide rules.

Sources: Club Alliance waiting-period terms and membership policies.

Whether You Receive a Full New Year

A late payment may be treated as a renewal from the original expiration date rather than a fresh twelve months from payment. Club Alliance specifically describes this treatment for renewals within 59 days after expiration.

Ask: “If I pay on this date, what will my new expiration date be?” Do not interpret a late-renewal window as proof you have roadside coverage while unpaid.

Refund Rules

Do not assume a midyear cancellation returns all unused dues. Club policies differ. For example, Mountain West’s cancellation FAQ describes a possible prorated refund subject to conditions involving membership duration and roadside-service use.

Source: AAA Mountain West cancellation and refund guidance.

What Is Your Roadside Backup Plan?

Before allowing coverage to expire, check whether you already have assistance through an auto policy, vehicle warranty, service contract or another membership. Read the actual benefit terms; a roadside phone number alone does not establish free service.

Compare:

  • Who is covered and in which vehicles.
  • Towing distance or reimbursement limit.
  • Service-call limits.
  • Activation or waiting periods.
  • Whether you must use the provider’s dispatcher.
  • Any upfront payment or reimbursement requirements.

Start with Best AAA Alternatives: Roadside Assistance Plans That May Cost Less.

If you plan to pay for occasional help yourself, consider the services you would actually need: jump-start assistance, lockout help and towing can have different costs and limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do new AAA members sometimes pay less than renewing members?

Introductory offers can reduce the first-year price or associate-member charges. Compare the promotion’s eligibility and next-year rate with your renewal, rather than assuming the advertised starting price applies to everyone.

Can AAA match last year’s promotional price?

You can ask, but there is no guarantee. Request an account-specific quote for the same people and benefits, including any available renewal discount.

How long should I wait for a better AAA offer?

There is no dependable nationwide timetable. Decide how long you are comfortable using your backup arrangements, rather than assuming a discounted email will arrive within a particular number of months.

Can I cancel and immediately rejoin at the new-member price?

Only if the offer’s terms allow it. Some promotions exclude recent primary or associate members. Check eligibility directly before letting your current membership expire.

Does turning off auto-renewal immediately remove my roadside benefits?

It generally concerns the next payment, but confirm your account’s coverage end date and that the request is limited to automatic renewal. Keep the written confirmation.

Should I renew if I did not use AAA last year?

Nonuse alone does not answer the question. Consider the cost of keeping backup help, your travel patterns, other coverage and whether the plan’s benefits match your needs. See Is AAA Membership Worth It? Roadside Costs vs Paying Out of Pocket.

Will AAA reimburse a tow during a membership gap?

Do not assume later renewal covers an earlier expense. Ask your club about eligibility before arranging service when possible. Read AAA Towing Reimbursement: Paid for a Tow? How to Get Reimbursed.

Before You Decide

Ask for a better renewal quote, compare a lower tier and confirm your payment deadline. If you still choose not to renew, obtain confirmation of the coverage end date and have another roadside plan ready. Treat a future discount as a possible bonus, not the foundation of the decision.

Does AAA Tow Motorcycles? Roadside Coverage and Limits

Does AAA Tow Motorcycles? Roadside Coverage and Limits

Yes, AAA can tow motorcycles, but motorcycle coverage is not included with every AAA membership. Whether your bike is covered depends on your regional AAA club, membership tier, and whether motorcycle or RV coverage has been added to your plan.

The towing limit can also vary substantially. Some AAA motorcycle plans provide towing up to 100 miles per covered call, while certain Premier plans include one longer tow of up to 200 miles. Other clubs sell motorcycle roadside assistance as a separate add-on rather than including it with standard Classic or Plus membership.

Table of Contents

Quick Answer: Does AAA Tow Motorcycles?

Yes, AAA does tow motorcycles when your membership specifically includes motorcycle roadside assistance. The exact towing distance and roadside benefits depend on the AAA club that serves your home area and the membership plan you purchased.

AAA Mountain West, for example, currently says motorcycle roadside assistance is included with certain higher-tier memberships. Its Premier coverage can include one tow up to 200 miles and remaining covered tows up to 100 miles. Auto Club Group uses a different model in parts of the Southeast, offering a separate motorcycle add-on that includes towing up to 100 miles.

Most important rule: Do not assume that because AAA covers your car, it automatically covers your motorcycle. Check your exact membership before you need a tow.

Which AAA Plans Cover Motorcycles?

AAA is made up of regional clubs, so there is no single nationwide motorcycle membership structure.

In some regions, motorcycle coverage is included only with higher-tier plans such as Premier or specific Plus Motorcycle or RV & Motorcycle memberships. In other areas, motorcycle coverage is sold as an optional add-on to an existing Classic, Plus or Premier membership.

AAA Structure How Motorcycle Coverage May Work
Standard membership only Motorcycles may not be included
Premier membership Some clubs include motorcycles automatically
Plus Motorcycle plan Available in some AAA regions
RV & Motorcycle coverage May cover motorcycles, RVs and certain trailers
Motorcycle add-on Some clubs let you add motorcycle roadside coverage separately

Regional differences matter: A benefit advertised by AAA in California, Arizona or Florida may not apply to a member in another state.

How Far Will AAA Tow a Motorcycle?

Motorcycle towing mileage depends on your membership.

AAA Mountain West currently lists motorcycle coverage under qualifying plans with up to four service requests per membership year. Its Premier plan includes one tow up to 200 miles and remaining covered tows up to 100 miles. Some regional motorcycle-specific plans provide up to 100 miles per tow.

Auto Club Group's current motorcycle add-on provides towing to a destination of your choice up to 100 miles from the breakdown point.

Example Coverage Possible Motorcycle Tow Benefit
Motorcycle add-on in participating Auto Club Group states Up to 100 miles
Qualifying Premier motorcycle coverage in some western states One tow up to 200 miles; remaining covered tows up to 100 miles
Other regional plans Varies by club and membership

Do not rely on a national mileage number: Check your local AAA benefit chart before a long motorcycle trip.

What Happens When AAA Tows a Motorcycle?

When you request service, tell AAA immediately that the disabled vehicle is a motorcycle. That allows dispatch to look for equipment suitable for transporting a bike.

A motorcycle generally needs to be secured properly during transport. Depending on the provider and situation, this may involve a flatbed, motorcycle carrier or other suitable towing equipment.

When You Call, Give AAA

  • Your membership number
  • Motorcycle make and model
  • Exact breakdown location
  • Whether the motorcycle rolls normally
  • Whether steering is locked
  • Whether the bike was involved in a crash
  • Your preferred repair shop or destination

Important: Tell dispatch it is a motorcycle before the truck is sent. Do not wait until the tow operator arrives.

What Else Does AAA Motorcycle Roadside Assistance Cover?

Qualifying motorcycle plans may provide more than towing. Current AAA motorcycle benefits can include fuel delivery, jump starts, flat-tire assistance, winching, locksmith reimbursement and trailer assistance.

Common Motorcycle Roadside Services

  • Motorcycle towing
  • Battery jump start
  • Emergency fuel delivery
  • Air for a flat tire
  • Towing when the tire cannot be repaired roadside
  • Winching or extrication near a normally traveled road
  • Motorcycle locksmith reimbursement
  • Motorcycle trailer assistance on qualifying plans

Roadside assistance is not repair insurance: AAA may get the motorcycle to safety or a repair shop, but replacement tires, batteries, keys and mechanical repairs can still be your responsibility.

Does AAA Help With Motorcycle Flat Tires?

Yes, qualifying motorcycle plans may help with a flat tire. AAA may provide air when appropriate or arrange a tow if the motorcycle cannot be safely ridden.

This is different from ordinary car flat-tire service because most motorcycles do not carry a spare tire that a roadside technician can simply install.

Expect a tow if necessary: A damaged motorcycle tire often needs to be repaired or replaced at a motorcycle or tire shop rather than roadside.

Does AAA Jump-Start Motorcycles?

Yes, motorcycle-capable AAA plans can include jump-start assistance.

A jump may get you moving if the battery was simply discharged, but repeated dead-battery problems may indicate a failing battery, charging-system fault or electrical drain.

Do not keep relying on jump starts: If the motorcycle repeatedly needs assistance, test the battery and charging system before your next long ride.

Does AAA Bring Gas to Motorcycles?

Yes, qualifying motorcycle roadside plans can include emergency fuel delivery.

Some AAA plans include enough fuel to reach the next gas station at no charge, while other membership levels or clubs may charge for the fuel itself even if delivery is included.

Auto Club Group's current motorcycle add-on says it will deliver enough fuel at no charge to allow the motorcycle to reach the nearest service station.

Does AAA Cover Motorcycle Trailers?

Some motorcycle plans also cover trailers carrying a motorcycle or trailers being pulled by a motorcycle.

Auto Club Group currently includes certain towing, flat-tire, winching and locksmith benefits for qualifying motorcycle trailers, subject to restrictions such as weight limits, proper load securing and non-commercial use.

Trailer coverage is not automatic everywhere: Verify the rules if you transport your motorcycle on a trailer.

How Many Motorcycle Roadside Calls Do You Get?

Many AAA memberships provide up to four roadside service requests per membership year, but again, motorcycle rules can differ by region.

AAA Mountain West currently lists up to four roadside requests per year for qualifying motorcycle coverage. Auto Club Group's motorcycle product can provide additional motorcycle-specific roadside calls under its regional program.

A Service Request Can Include

  • Tow
  • Jump start
  • Fuel delivery
  • Flat-tire assistance
  • Winching
  • Other covered roadside dispatches

For a broader explanation of annual limits, read AAA Roadside Assistance Limits: Calls, Towing & Extra Charges.

Is There a Waiting Period for Motorcycle Coverage?

There can be. This is important if you are thinking about buying AAA after your motorcycle has already broken down.

AAA Mountain West currently states that roadside service begins 48 hours after purchasing membership online. Auto Club Group's motorcycle terms state that roadside benefits begin three days after payment of dues for its motorcycle program.

Do not buy coverage after breaking down and assume the tow will immediately be free. Check activation rules before purchasing or upgrading a plan.

How Much Does AAA Motorcycle Coverage Cost?

There is no nationwide price.

Auto Club Group currently advertises its motorcycle roadside add-on for $35 per member in Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Puerto Rico. Other AAA clubs include motorcycles only in qualifying higher-tier plans, so the cost is built into the membership price instead.

Your Cost May Include

  • Base AAA membership
  • Motorcycle add-on
  • Higher-tier membership
  • Household-member fees
  • Extra towing mileage

Better comparison: Do not compare membership price alone. Compare the annual cost with the price of one long-distance motorcycle tow.

What Can Still Cost Extra?

Even with motorcycle roadside coverage, some costs can remain out of pocket.

  • Towing beyond the included mileage
  • Replacement motorcycle battery
  • Replacement tire
  • Mechanical repairs
  • Parts and fluids
  • Storage charges
  • Special recovery
  • Service that falls outside plan rules
  • Unsafe or inaccessible off-road recovery

Before approving an over-limit tow: Ask what the additional mileage charge will be and whether other fees apply.

What AAA Motorcycle Coverage May Not Cover

Roadside assistance is intended for eligible breakdowns, not every motorcycle problem.

Possible Exclusions or Limitations

  • Commercial-use trailers
  • Overweight or improperly loaded trailers
  • Unsafe recovery locations
  • Severe off-road situations
  • Mechanical repair parts
  • Collision damage repair
  • Theft or vandalism damage repair
  • Services requested before coverage activates

Exact exclusions belong to your local AAA membership terms, so review those before relying on the plan.

What to Do Before Calling AAA for a Motorcycle Tow

Step 1: Get to a Safe Location

If possible, move yourself away from active traffic without putting yourself at greater risk.

Step 2: Identify the Problem

Tell dispatch whether the bike has a flat tire, dead battery, no fuel, mechanical failure or crash damage.

Step 3: Confirm Motorcycle Coverage

Check your AAA app, membership documents or local club account if you are unsure.

Step 4: Confirm Towing Mileage

Know whether your chosen motorcycle shop is within the covered distance.

Step 5: Tell Dispatch It Is a Motorcycle

Give the make, model and any unusual transport requirements.

Step 6: Ask About Extra Charges

If the destination exceeds your towing limit, ask for the additional mileage rate before authorizing service.

AAA Motorcycle Coverage vs Paying for a Tow Yourself

Motorcycle roadside coverage becomes more valuable when you routinely ride far from home or far from a motorcycle dealer.

AAA Motorcycle Coverage Paying Out of Pocket
Annual membership cost No annual fee
Included towing within plan limit Pay each tow yourself
Fuel, jump and other roadside benefits may be included Each service billed separately
Service-call limits apply No annual call limit
Coverage rules vary You choose any available provider

Best fit: Riders who tour, commute long distances or ride in rural areas may get much more value from motorcycle roadside coverage than someone who only rides close to home.

Bottom Line

AAA does tow motorcycles, but only when your membership includes motorcycle roadside assistance. The biggest differences are which plan qualifies, how far the bike can be towed, how many service calls you receive and whether motorcycle coverage is included or sold as an add-on.

Before your next ride: Confirm that motorcycles are listed on your plan, check your towing mileage and service-call limit, and save the address of a motorcycle repair shop within your covered tow range.
